Most people on this planet have heard the name Steve Jobs, and generally associate him as being a wealthy and big time technology entrepreneur. What you may not know is that he never graduated college, in fact he dropped out of it. He found a way to learn what he needed to and get done what he needed to get done in his own way. Now, to make things sound even worse, Steve Jobs was adopted by parents who hadn’t graduated high school. So even with all these things that would seem to work against someone, he found a way to be successful. If you were to only hear about his life growing up and up to the point he dropped out of college, you probably would think he ended up a bum on the street corner. No. Steve Jobs was ahead of his time, he thought like millennials do today, he had great hopes and dreams, but he did not want to about getting there the conventional way. He wanted to go about it in his own way that made things faster, simpler, and more practical. Not to say that every person who bypasses the “conventional routes” will be as successful as Steve Jobs, but some people should really recognize the potential of that decision and stop bashing everyone who wants to attempt it.
I have before talked about two separate sides of the brain, and now I have even more insight into the differences. Not to sound rash, or like a crazy loon, but our brain is almost like two different people, just barely held together. The right side, the creative one, lives only in the present and it only thinks in the present. The left side of the brain thinks logically, in chronological sequences, it stores our memories from details it takes and wants to keep from our right hemisphere as it thinks about the present. We don’t talk to the right, all the brain chatter in our heads comes from left. If we heard the right hemisphere chatter we would be hearing a bunch of commands and necessities for us, but it is the left that connects us with the world. If you were to cut the ties to your left brain, you could be anything you wanted to be and only sense the energy around you and understand only things occurring in that exact moment. This would become a problem when trying to remember, well remember anything at all. Now, if we were to choose to live in the right of brain a little more often and more predominantly, it would change the world! The truth is you really can choose the way you are, and who you are, you just have to want to.
When does one reach their creative potential? Wrong. You don’t ever reach your creative potential, you are born with it. So how do some people end up being more creative than others? Well first you have to understand that the right and left side of your brain do different tasks; The right controls creativity and the left controls structural educational subjects such as math, science, and formal literacy. As we grow up, begin to go to school, and continue on, an emphasis is placed majorly on those structural educational subjects. The old cliche, that is often more correlated with aging, use it or lose it, can be applied here. Schools are constantly asking students to use the left (structural) side of their brains, but hardly asking for them to use the right (creative) side of their brain. Like with most anything, if you stop using it and taking care of it, it will get increasingly less functional and usable. So as children and teens use their right side less and less, the creativity they were born with slowly starts to disappear, and eventually becomes nearly non existent. Now think about it, as our schools produce more college professors, more lawyers, and more government officials that are just doing what they know, and not questioning the things they are doing, or trying to create new approaches or processes are we really moving forward with education? I don’t think so. While I would concur the structural subjects are important, I believe creative subjects like Art, Graphic Design, Programming, 3D and 2D Design, Music, Dance, and Choirs are all just as important. They let the mind stay free by balancing the sides, and they help create people who can much more easily take new approaches and see things in a new, creative way.
A quick note
Seen not heard. The profile given to many teenagers in the generation prior to the current millennial. The parents of those millennial find it hard to understand the reasons their kids are so defiant, so rebellious, and so testing of what they tell them. They fail to realize that where they gave up on rebellion and accepted the hard stereotypes they were given and allowed most of their generation to fall victim to the profile, seen not heard, the millennials don’t. They are stronger in some ways, even if they are weaker in others. They are strong enough to stand up and rebel against their elders, question why they do what they do, defy the typical idea that kids just listen as if they are an object simply seen. As a millennial, I say that while the wisdom of our elders deserves much respect, our young minds deserve just as much explanation to reason. Without explanation our minds will continue to question, continue to rebel, and continue to defy the profile of seen not heard. We will do this until we are heard, and seen for what we say and who we are, rather than be seen as an object to be manipulated to their idea of “an adult”. If they learn that taking that profile away from us is not is a bad thing, they may see what amazing things our generation can do because of our nature. I’ll end with this, do not blame our parents and elders, it isn’t their fault that they were raised the way they were, and have adopted the methods of parenting they have. They simply are reciprocating what has been passed on through generations.
